Our purpose
Bringing township communities further onto the playing field.
South Africa’s township communities are rich in talent, knowledge, creativity and entrepreneurial potential. Yet their residents and businesses remain excluded from many of the networks, resources and economic opportunities available elsewhere.
Our clients do not need to arrive with a social-impact project. Whatever brings them to a township community, our role is to help create a responsible collaboration and, wherever possible, value on both sides.
Through every collaboration, we look for ways for township communities to participate not only as beneficiaries, but as partners, contributors and active participants in South Africa’s wider economy.
Our current work
Building Futures Through Timber
Sisonke.world is working with the University of Pretoria, iThuba Innovation Hub and Happy Feet Youth Project on Building Futures Through Timber in Langa.
The collaboration brings together academic expertise, timber-industry knowledge and local experience to explore new possibilities for housing, skills development and economic opportunity.
As the local consultancy and project-management partner, Sisonke.world facilitates community participation, coordinates local stakeholders and supports implementation on the ground.
The project also includes research into how community members perceive timber construction before and after engaging with the pilot—made possible through Sisonke’s local relationships, mobilisation and coordination.

Built on years of working together
Meet the founders.
Sisonke.world was founded by Siviwe Mbinda and Monique Groenewoud, who first met while working together in Langa in 2018. Since then, they have collaborated on education, youth development and community initiatives—building years of shared experience, trusted relationships and practical understanding of how to get things done in Langa.
Siviwe has lived in Langa for many years and has been actively involved in the community since 2007. As the founder of Happy Feet Youth Project and iThuba Innovation Hub, and director of Siviwe Tours, he has built an extensive network across township communities and developed partnerships with universities, businesses, funders and local organisations. He brings deep local knowledge, cultural understanding and the ability to connect the right people around an opportunity.
Monique brings more than two decades of experience in strategy, communication and complex project delivery. Before working in South Africa, she directed and produced national prime-time television programmes, high-profile events and large-scale productions in the Netherlands. From 2018 to 2021, she worked with Township Film School I AM in Langa, first as a trainer and later as its Managing Director, overseeing programmes, partnerships, funding and day-to-day operations.
Together, they combine two essential sides of working successfully within township communities: local roots and trusted relationships, supported by professional structure, strategic thinking and experienced project management.
That combination is at the heart of Sisonke.world.
